What is Your Digital Identity?
05/14/2008 - By Adam Citron, Nortic Consulting Adam Citron, Nortic Consulting
How many times have you visited a website and because it didn’t look good, or have good information, or wasn’t updated, and you made a conscious or unconscious, fair or unfair initial summarization of that company or person?
What is Your Digital Identity? How many times have you visited a website and because it didn’t look good, or have good information, or wasn’t updated, and you made a conscious or unconscious, fair or unfair initial summarization of that company or person? Did you think: How can their product or service be good if their site looks like this? Have you ever tried to Google a business for one reason or another and couldn’t find them? What did you think about them then?
I have a client who does remodeling for homes. She targets higher class homes. Someone built her a simple template website many years ago that never portrayed what her business really was or how incredible her work was. Her neighbor referred her to a friend and the friend went to the web to find out more about the business. The prospect was so turned off by the website, that she took her $100,000 project to another company with a better image.
That example was just for a website, but this holds true throughout the web. Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 goes beyond the website. It’s a given that every business needs a website nowadays that accurately represents the brand and corporate identity of the business. If a business doesn’t have this they are missing out.
I had a conversation with a C-Level Executive Coach a few months ago. Her father was a police officer and scorched the fear of identity theft into her. She was afraid of having anything on the web with her name, including a web site or even a LinkedIn profile. She lost a $50,000 job and the prospect told her it was specifically because he couldn’t find any credible information about her on the Internet.
We all know there any many resources for people to find out about businesses. There are organizations we can call. There are books we can get. The Internet is faster and more convenient – so people use it. So if people are using the fast and convenient Internet to do research on individual professionals and businesses, wouldn’t it make sense that these people do what they can to ensure what they find is plentiful and credible?
What can do business owners do beyond their website? What about the individual professionals out there who don’t own a business, are responsible for generating their own leads, and can’t have their own website due to compliance issues? There are things they can do on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to ensure the digital identity of their name and/or their company’s name is strong.
The general idea of Digital Identity is this: What comes up for your name or company name in a Google Search? How many of the 10 default links are about you and are positive and enhance your credibility, such as your website, LinkedIn profile, Bodd site, or a link to your blog. How many articles or reviews come up that are negative about yourself or your company? How many links are personal and lend no credibility to your professional self?
You may not need to pay a company to do all of this for you (depending on your needs), but you do need to find out what to do and how to do it correctly. We have begun to offer workshops teaching small business owners and individual professionals in an intimate environment WHAT they need to do and HOW they need to do it. Most workshops are hands on and are not run by PowerPoint. If you are interested in learning how do enhance your Digital Identity, visit our website or drop me an email. What is YOUR Digital Identity?
